Best trumpets for jazz: comparison and buying guide

From a quiet attack to a big-band section.

Editorial selection · Club Gre2Jazz · Documentary review:

Separate the trumpet, mouthpiece and player when choosing for jazz. We compare an intermediate Yamaha with a versatile professional Bach, both in B♭. No bell automatically makes an instrument modal, bebop or swing: response and intonation need to support your technique.

B♭; two-piece gold-brass bell; 11.65 mm ML bore.

Why we would choose it

The option to assess before moving to a professional model. Compare note centring and ease of response with a teacher: comfort at moderate volume helps focused work on articulation and control.

When to choose something else

Do not expect bell material alone to recreate a favourite soloist. Confirm GII generation and B♭ tuning rather than relying on a similar-looking product photo.

02

You need a versatile professional trumpet and can audition it.

Bach Stradivarius 180S37

B♭; one-piece #37 bell; .459-inch ML bore; silver plated.

Why we would choose it

Worth considering for moving between combo, big band and other ensembles with one instrument. The #37 bell is a checkable specification; playing resistance and comfort require an audition with your own mouthpiece.

When to choose something else

If you cannot identify a current limitation, lessons and maintenance may come first. Not every Stradivarius is a 180S37: confirm bell number and finish.

Before you invest

Choose for the music you play.

01

Unforced response

Play soft attacks, slurs and familiar phrases. High notes alone do not represent everyday work.

02

Identify the exact model

Confirm B♭, generation, bell and finish. Variants within one series can have different construction.

03

The mouthpiece matters

Keep the mouthpiece constant for comparison. Allow for cleaning and valve maintenance.
