Best digital pianos for jazz: comparison and buying guide

Touch, pedals and outputs before hundreds of sounds.

Editorial selection · Club Gre2Jazz · Documentary review:

For jazz voicings and dynamics, a feature list cannot replace an action you can control. We compare two 88-key weighted pianos with speakers and connections for different settings. The Yamaha is a portable starting point; the Roland adds controls worth assessing when home and stage share one piano.

The models and their trade-offs

Why we would choose it

Our starting comparison when piano practice and portability matter more than deep sound editing. The 88 keys and published weight help plan space and transport; budget for a stable stand and a compatible pedal.

When to choose something else

If you change sounds and levels during a set, also compare the FP-60X controls. A basic pedal in a bundle is not necessarily a half-pedalling unit.

Why we would choose it

Worth comparing when practice and performance share one instrument and accessible controls matter. The decisive comparison is tactile: try soft chords, repeated notes and wide voicings on both pianos.

When to choose something else

For frequent travel, check the weight with a case and consider stairs. Stand, pedal unit and bench may be separate; FP-60X is distinct from FP-60 and FP-30.

Before you invest

Choose for the music you play.

01

Dynamic control under your fingers

Test pianissimo, dense chords and repeated notes. Judge the action as well as a headphone sound demonstration.

02

Compatible pedalling

Verify compatibility and half-pedalling for the chosen accessory. Stand, pedal unit and bench are not necessarily included.

03

Rehearsal and stage

Include case weight, line outputs and local power supply. An imported adapter needs a compatibility check for your country.
