The festival was founded in 1987 by executive producer Patrick Taylor and the saxophonist and artistic director Jim Galloway; Josh Grossman has been artistic director in recent years. The first season used Roy Thomson Hall, the CN Tower and the Metro Convention Centre, and the event has since spread out to Nathan Phillips Square as its main hub plus more than forty other locations across the city.
Programming combines free outdoor stages with ticketed concerts in halls such as Massey Hall, and the festival has run a neighbourhood strand in Bloor-Yorkville. It draws over half a million people a year, which makes it the third largest annual music festival in Toronto. The event was previously sponsored under the du Maurier name before TD Bank took over the title sponsorship.
