Founded in 2009, the festival is run by Jazz Sudbury, a charitable arts organisation whose stated mission is to produce performances and charitable activities in music in order to educate and advance public understanding and appreciation of the arts. It is a member of Jazz Festivals Canada and the only festival in the national association based in northern Ontario.
The format is three distinct days rather than a continuous run. Main-stage concerts are held at Place des Arts on Larch Street, the francophone arts centre in downtown Sudbury; a club crawl the following night moves through downtown rooms including the Little Montreal Bistro, La Fromagerie, The Townehouse and Larch at Elgin; and a family day closes the weekend. Programming leans on Canadian artists, with the 2026 opening night led by the Montreal singer and guitarist Susie Arioli.
