Founded in 1987 as the Atlantic Jazz Festival, the event is designated a Hallmark Event by the Halifax Regional Municipality and draws around 55,000 visitors a year. Its main stage sits on the Salter Lot at 1521 Lower Water Street on the harbourfront, and the programme spreads to indoor rooms such as St. Matthew's United Church, The Carleton and the Lighthouse Arts Centre.
Programming reaches well beyond straight-ahead jazz into world music, blues, Latin, R&B and roots, and the 40th anniversary season added a new boardwalk series, 75 hours of free programming and a commissioned big band work. The organisation runs year-round activity as well, including its Jazz Labs education programme, community awards, and off-season concerts at The Stage at St Andrew's on Coburg Road.
