Founded in 1986, the festival is run by an independent organisation in Rimouski, a city of about 50,000 in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region, roughly 300 kilometres downriver from Quebec City. It is one of the few Canadian jazz festivals scheduled at the start of September rather than in June or July, which gives it access to touring artists after the summer circuit has finished.
Programming is split between the Salle Desjardins, a tent set up at the Place Festi Jazz Vidéotron, and a range of community locations around the town, with free outdoor activity running alongside the ticketed concerts. The maritime setting and the mix of established names with emerging players are what distinguish it from the larger urban festivals further west.
