Who is Marilyn Crispell

Marilyn Crispell is an American pianist, composer, and recording artist, born around 1947. Her work is associated with jazz, free jazz, and jazz and blues. She performs on piano. Her releases include Hyperion (1995), Connecting Spirits (1996), Amaryllis (2001), This Appearing World (2011), Live at Vision Festival (2012), Parallel Moments (2014), Songs Along the Way (2018), and Our Daily Bread (2023). She is known as a longtime member of Anthony Braxton's quartet in the 1980s and 1990s. Scott Yanow described her as a powerful player with her own way of using space, and Jon Pareles wrote that hearing her play solo piano is like monitoring an active volcano, noting she is one of few pianists who rise to the challenge of free jazz.
