Best ride cymbals for jazz: comparison and buying guide

Stick definition, wash and the character of the pulse.

Zildjian K Custom Dark Ride 20″ · K0965 · 20 inches

Meinl Byzance Jazz Thin Ride 20″ (B20JTR)

A ride can shape a combo’s pulse more than an extra tom. Compare stick attack with the sustained wash underneath it. These two 20-inch rides offer different approaches; the shared diameter keeps the comparison useful without removing variation between individual cymbals and players.

Compare the two options

Model	Technical difference	A good fit if…
Zildjian K Custom Dark Ride 20″	20-inch K Custom Dark ride; B20 alloy.	You want to compare stick definition with a darker texture.
Meinl Byzance Jazz Thin Ride 20″ (B20JTR)	20-inch thin ride; B20 bronze; hand hammered.	You prioritise sensitivity at restrained dynamics.

20-inch K Custom Dark ride; B20 alloy.

Why we would choose it

A candidate for a main combo ride. Compare the stick on the bow, the developing wash and the bell with your own stick type: a solo demo cannot reproduce the volume of your group.

When to choose something else

For a loud electric band, audition whether stick definition remains audible. Confirm 20 inches: 22-inch rides and other K Custom lines are different options.

You prioritise sensitivity at restrained dynamics.

20-inch thin ride; B20 bronze; hand hammered.

Why we would choose it

A comparison for trios and groups where the cymbal shapes texture as well as time. Judge how much sustain you need and whether you can keep a swing pattern clear at your playing level.

When to choose something else

This is not the B20JMTR Medium Thin Ride or B20JMTC crash. Hand-hammered cymbals can vary between units, so hearing the actual cymbal and checking return terms matters.

Before you invest

Choose for the music you play.

Your stick and volume

Nylon and wood tips do not produce the same attack. Compare using your stick and the dynamics of your group.

Identify ride versus crash

Check the full code. B20JTR is a ride; similar references may be crashes or different weights.

Hear the actual cymbal

Where possible, hear the cymbal you will receive and check returns. A series name does not guarantee identical response between units.
