Best tenor saxophones for jazz: comparison and buying guide

Body, articulation and room to develop your sound.

Editorial selection · Club Gre2Jazz · Documentary review:

The B♭ tenor has a place in ballads, hard bop and contemporary groups. Begin with low-note response, intonation and physical comfort. Its size makes support and key reach part of the buying decision; a darker tone cannot be read from lacquer or price.

The models and their trade-offs

01

You want a tenor for regular study and small-group playing.

Yamaha YTS-480

B♭ tenor; high F♯ key.

Why we would choose it

A sensible base for a complete setup. Leaving room for a suitable mouthpiece, comfortable support and regular servicing can help more than spending the entire budget on the horn.

When to choose something else

Check weight and key reach before an online purchase. Do not use a very open mouthpiece to compensate for a poorly adjusted tenor.

02

Your playing schedule justifies a professional tenor.

Yamaha YTS-62III

B♭ tenor; professional 62III series.

Why we would choose it

A shortlist option for a long-term main horn. Judge quiet response, octave transitions and intonation with your usual setup rather than the loudness of the first note.

When to choose something else

Changing horns may not produce the darker tone you want. First investigate mouthpiece, reed and technique, and verify the advertised generation.

Before you invest

Choose for the music you play.

01

Quiet low notes

Try soft attacks and long tones. If the tenor only responds when pushed, have the sealing checked.

02

Weight and posture

Assess a strap or harness and thumb position. An audition should resemble a normal practice session.

03

Do not buy a promised tone

Mouthpiece, reed and technique affect the result. Do not attribute a different setup’s effect solely to a new horn.

Sonny Rollins

Sonny Rollins is a tenor and solo-building listening reference. Hear how he develops motifs and organises rhythm: those decisions transfer to your playing more directly than purchasing a promised tone.

Artists are listening references for the instrument. Their inclusion does not mean they use, recommend or endorse the selected models.
