Best alto saxophones for jazz: comparison and buying guide

Agile phrasing, melody and a voice of your own.

Editorial selection · Club Gre2Jazz · Documentary review:

A good jazz alto should seal properly, respond to quiet attacks and let you work on intonation without fighting the keywork. We compare two Yamaha levels to separate a functional improvement from a higher budget. Both are E♭ altos; if you want the lower tenor voice, start with that guide instead.

Yamaha YAS-480

E♭ alto; high F♯ key.

Why we would choose it

Our starting point for a committed learner. The intermediate range makes sense when you want to assess keywork and intonation with a teacher while keeping room in the budget for lessons and setup.

When to choose something else

If your present horn is well adjusted and you need a specific change in response, also try the 62. Budget for an arrival check rather than assuming the instrument will arrive perfectly regulated.

E♭ alto; professional 62III series.

Why we would choose it

Consider it as a long-term instrument for a player who can judge the difference. Compare soft attacks, slurs and register changes against the 480 using the same mouthpiece and reed.

When to choose something else

A higher price will not solve an unsettled embouchure. Check the exact generation and model suffix in the listing, especially when comparing regional imports.

Before you invest

Choose for the music you play.

01

Sealing and setup

Arrange an arrival check and test quiet low notes. A minor regulation issue can feel like a technique problem.

02

Mouthpiece and reed

Compare both horns with the same setup. Changing everything at once makes the useful difference difficult to identify.

03

Budget for maintenance

Leave budget for servicing, reeds, support and lessons. A finish upgrade does not replace good regulation.

Lee Konitz

Listen to Lee Konitz for an alto approach built around lines and space. For bebop or cool jazz, use listening to guide phrasing rather than expecting a model to contain an artist’s sound.

Artists are listening references for the instrument. Their inclusion does not mean they use, recommend or endorse the selected models.
