Who is Kirk Whalum

Kirk Whalum is an American saxophonist and flautist associated with smooth jazz, contemporary jazz, R&B and gospel. Born around 1958, he has built a career spanning several decades, with a discography that includes albums such as *And You Know That!* (1988), *Joined at the Hip* (1996) and *Colors* (1997). His work also extends to thematic projects, including *The Gospel According to Jazz, Chapter I* (1998) and *Kirk Whalum Performs the Babyface Songbook* (2005), alongside later releases like *Roundtrip* (2007) and *How Does Christmas Sound?* (2021). Whalum has received 12 Grammy nominations over his career, winning once in 2011 for Best Gospel Song for “It’s What I Do,” a collaboration with Lalah Hathaway. His recorded output appears across major streaming and retail platforms, and he maintains an active online presence. He continues to be recognised primarily for his saxophone work within the smooth jazz and gospel crossover fields.
