The festival dates from the early 1980s and reached its 40th anniversary in 2026, making it one of the oldest free jazz festivals in the Northeast. Free admission has been the organizing principle since the beginning and the festival still states it plainly: the music is free, always. That has kept it dependent on sponsors and volunteers rather than gate revenue, and the festival has had gaps and venue changes over the decades as a result.
The current format splits the event between two very different settings - the Syracuse University campus in the city and an apple orchard in LaFayette, about fifteen miles south - which lets it combine indoor campus events with a large outdoor field day. The 2026 edition ran July 9-12.
