The organization behind it started in 1979 as the Telfair Jazz Society, founded by Teddy Adams, Ben Tucker, Randall Reese, Tom Glaser and Ken Palmer, and became the Coastal Jazz Association in 1981. The first festival was held at Grayson Stadium in 1983. It has stayed free ever since, funded by the nonprofit and its sponsors rather than by ticket sales, and it runs during the last full week of September; the 2026 park dates are September 18 to 20.
The week begins in venues across the city and culminates in Forsyth Park. The house band, the Savannah Jazz Orchestra, appears alongside the Savannah Jazz Hall of Fame Band, and the 2026 bill includes Jane Monheit with the Savannah Jazz Orchestra, the Joe Gransden Big Band, Gino Castillo and the Latin Cowboys, Huntertones, the Storyville Stompers and the University of North Florida Jazz Ensemble #1. School Band Day closes the festival on the Sunday.
