The August Wilson African American Cultural Center, at 980 Liberty Avenue, is both organizer and principal venue; the festival extends outdoors onto Liberty Avenue itself. Janis Burley, the Center's president and chief executive, founded the festival and serves as its artistic director. It reached its 16th edition in 2026.
Admission to the weekend is free and open to the public, with paid VIP upgrades and separately ticketed satellite events such as the Jazz Train and the Taste of Jazz party. The festival programs national and international artists alongside players from Pittsburgh's own jazz lineage, which runs through Mary Lou Williams, Erroll Garner, Billy Strayhorn, Art Blakey and Ahmad Jamal. The 2026 edition ran September 17-20, with the main outdoor weekend on the 19th and 20th.
