Started in 2001 by a small group of local music enthusiasts, the festival closes Allen Avenue and North Gore Avenue in Old Webster for a single long day, roughly 1pm to 11pm, with free admission and free parking. Two stages carry the program: the Webster University Stage at 35 North Gore and the Sunset Hills Subaru Stage at 20 Allen Avenue, which run alternately so music continues without a break.
The bill is built almost entirely from St. Louis jazz and blues musicians, which makes the festival a yearly index of the metro's own players rather than a touring showcase. Around the stages, area restaurants run food stalls and street performers work the crowd, and attendance has grown past 12,000. Its September date puts it a week or so after the Chicago-area festivals, at the end of the regional outdoor season.
