Elaine Lorillard established the festival in 1954 and hired George Wein to organize the first edition; Wein went on to shape the model that most American jazz festivals still follow. Since 2011 the event has been run by the Newport Festivals Foundation, the 501(c)(3) non-profit Wein created, which also produces the Newport Folk Festival on the same site. The festival was cancelled in 2020 and returned in 2021.
Programming runs from late morning to early evening on all three days, with the main stages set inside and around the ramparts of Fort Adams at the mouth of Newport Harbor. The bill mixes established jazz names with artists from adjacent traditions - soul, hip hop, funk and songwriting - which has become the festival's defining editorial choice and the main point of argument among its regulars. Admission is by digital ticket only, delivered through a mobile app and scanned at the gate.
