The festival was founded in 1996 by Litchfield Performing Arts, a not-for-profit established in 1981, and has moved sites several times across the Litchfield Hills - White Memorial Conservation Center, the Goshen Fairgrounds, the Kent School grounds - before settling at its current home in Washington, Connecticut. It is tied to the Litchfield Jazz Camp, which began in 1997, and camp students perform alongside the professional bill.
The 2026 edition, the 31st, ran July 24-26, opening on the Friday with the Litchfield Jazz Fest Dectet. The festival's continuity with its education program is its defining feature: the same organization runs the camp, the festival and a year-round concert series, and faculty members regularly appear on the festival stage.
