Hyde Park Jazz Festival

The Hyde Park Jazz Festival spreads two days of free music across a dozen venues on Chicago's South Side. The 2026 edition, its 20th anniversary, took place September 26-27.

Rather than building one large site, the festival uses the existing architecture of the Hyde Park neighborhood: the outdoor Midway Plaisance plus indoor rooms including the Logan Center Penthouse and Augustana Lutheran Church on 55th Street, twelve venues in all in 2026. Sets run close together and audiences walk between them, which lets the program hold large ensembles and quiet duo settings on the same afternoon.

Admission is free, with a suggested $10 donation, and the festival is run by a small nonprofit staff led by executive director Kate Dumbleton. It has leaned on a mix of institutional partners on the University of Chicago campus and neighborhood venues, an arrangement that mattered in 2025 when a $30,000 federal grant was withdrawn and the festival went ahead anyway.
