Edgefest

Founded in 1997 and produced by Kerrytown Concert House itself, Edgefest is the outlier among Midwest jazz festivals: it is programmed entirely around music that sits outside the mainstream circuit, described by the organizers as cutting-edge jazz, creative improvisation and category-defying work overlooked commercially. The venue is a converted house with roughly 110 seats, so the festival trades scale for proximity between musicians and audience.

That small room is the point. Where the region's summer festivals put big bands on outdoor stages, Edgefest books improvisers who need the acoustics and attention of a listening space, and it does so across four consecutive days each October. DownBeat has called it the annual rite of fall in Michigan music, running off the beaten tracks, and thirty consecutive editions have made it a fixed reference point for the American creative-music circuit.
