Detroit Jazz Festival

The Detroit Jazz Festival takes over Hart Plaza every Labor Day weekend and bills itself as the largest free jazz festival in the world. The 2026 edition, its 47th year, ran September 4-7 with all three main stages consolidated in Hart Plaza.

The festival is produced by the Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation, which also runs concerts and education programs the rest of the year. Admission has stayed free through donations and sponsorship rather than ticketing, and the foundation makes that funding model a public part of its identity. For 2026 the downtown footprint was pulled together so that all three main stages sit inside Hart Plaza, with additional programming at the Gretchen C. Valade Jazz Center at Wayne State University.

Programming is built around an artist-in-residence, a role held in 2026 by saxophonist Joe Lovano, who appears in several different settings across the weekend rather than a single headline set. Two recurring strands sit alongside the main stages: the Detroit Signature Series, which foregrounds musicians from the city's own lineage, and a late-night jazz club series curated by Dee Dee Bridgewater. Local vendors and food trucks fill the plaza between sets.
