The festival takes its name and its geography from Charlie Parker, who lived on Avenue B beside Tompkins Square Park; the Harlem dates connect the event to the uptown neighborhoods where he worked. City Parks Foundation programs it as part of its summer concert series, and every performance is free and unticketed, with the audience seated on the park lawns.
The 2026 edition, the 34th, ran August 28-30, with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra opening at Marcus Garvey Park and Ravi Coltrane closing at Tompkins Square Park. Around the main stages the festival adds free satellite programming across Manhattan - screenings, community garden sets and late jam sessions - which makes it one of the largest free jazz gatherings in the city.
