The festival was established in 1978 and is produced by the City of Atlanta Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs, which runs it as a nonprofit operation dedicated to preserving the festival's legacy. The 2026 edition, the 49th, runs May 23 to 25 in Piedmont Park. Admission is free and open to the public, which is the festival's founding commitment rather than a recent change.

The Memorial Day weekend in the park is only the endpoint of a longer program. The festival also curates '31 Days of Jazz' across the whole of May, a series of jazz events hosted in venues throughout metro Atlanta, so the festival brand effectively underwrites a month of club and community programming before the park weekend begins.
